Leveraging the benefits of ultra-low ash lubricants in diesel engines – extended diesel particulate filter servicing intervals and enhanced fuel economy – may become more important as emissions standards and requirements on the useful life of engines become more stringent, a Chevron official said in a presentation at an online event SAE International last week.
Shawn Whitacre, a senior engineer at Chevron, said in his presentation the industry has learned more about the impact of ash accumulation over the years, “Reducing maintenance and fuel consumption. from ultra-low ash lubricants” at SAE International's Fuel, Powertrain and Lubricants Digital Summit held September 28-30.
“One of the things I did was try to quantify the impact on fuel economy,” says Whitacre. “We know ash clogs [diesel engine particulate filters]. That can do a few things – it has an impact on the back pressure exerted by that system, and we know that an increase in back pressure directly reduces fuel economy. "
This can also affect the cycle and frequency of regeneration, he adds, "so the more often you regenerate, the more fuel you burn," he said. "Both of those effects can contribute to fuel economy penalties over time unless other things are done to remedy that effect."
Extremely low ash oils can help alleviate those fuel economy effects. Testing showed that the backpressure effect alone contributed to a life-cycle fuel economy advantage of about 0.7%, he said, in addition to the advantages seen through reduced regenerative frequency, that's an extra 2.3%. “So the net effect of those two improvements reduced fuel consumption over the system's life by 3%,” says Whitacre. "That's in addition to the maintenance-related benefits that extra-low ash oil can provide."
